At the 2025 UNECE Regional Forum on Sustainable Development held in Geneva this April, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) highlighted the urgent need to transform agrifood systems in Europe and Central Asia, addressing persistent gender inequalities, digital divides, and water management challenges, amongst others, that continue to jeopardize regional food security.

In the remote islands of rural Indonesia, the Rote Ndao community faces significant nutritional challenges. The rise of processed foods and shifting sociocultural norms have led to a decline in traditional diets, resulting in a dual burden of malnutrition and obesity. In response, Rahsa Nusantara is harnessing indigenous knowledge to promote sustainable nutrition. As one of eleven startups supported by FAO’s SDG Agrifood Accelerator Programme, this enterprise is producing nutrient-rich products from indigenous plants while creating sustainable livelihoods for local farming communities.

FAO was a key contributor to the Asia-Pacific Forum for Sustainable Development (APFSD), held 25-28 February 2025 in Bangkok, Thailand. Over 1 000 participants gathered under the theme "Advancing sustainable, inclusive, science- and evidence-based solutions for the 2030 Agenda and its SDGs for leaving no one behind in Asia and the Pacific". This annual forum, hosted by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), serves as a platform for countries to assess regional progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) share best practices and strengthen collaboration across the region, to ensure no one is left behind.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has assumed joint custodianship with the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) of a new Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicator regarding Minimum Dietary Diversity (MDD). This indicator captures a crucial aspect previously lacking in tracking progress toward ending malnutrition and achieving SDG 2 (Zero Hunger) and the broader 2030 Agenda.
