FAO on the road to the High-Level Political Forum 2025
Transforming Agrifood Systems for Sustainable Development

The 2025 High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) will take place from 14-23 July in New York under the theme: Advancing sustainable, inclusive, science- and evidence-based solutions for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for leaving no one behind.
It will review:
- SDG 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages;
- SDG 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls;
- SDG 8: Promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all;
- SDG 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development; and
- SDG 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development.
FAO’s role in this year’s HLPF
Agrifood systems transformation is relevant across all SDGs in the 2030 Agenda. FAO has been actively engaged in the preparatory process by providing updated data and analysis to the HLPF via intergovernmental inputs, participating at Regional Fora on Sustainable Development and reporting on SDG Implementation. FAO has also participated in Expert Group Meetings on SDGs 3, 5, 8 and 14 and highlighted the transformative potential of agrifood systems in advancing the overall 2030 Agenda. From promoting healthy diets and a One Health approach to promoting equality between women and men, decent employment opportunities, sustainable aquatic food systems, fostering robust global partnerships and beyond, FAO’s work aligns closely with this year’s SDGs under review.
Looking ahead
FAO will once again be hosting a Special Event on The State of Food Security and Nutrition 2025 dedicated to this year’s theme: Addressing High Food Price Inflation for Food Security and Nutrition. The Special Event will examine the challenges rising food prices pose for achieving SDG targets 2.1 and 2.2 of ending hunger, food insecurity and all forms of malnutrition by 2030. It will also highlight progress towards SDG 2, the drivers behind recent food inflation, its impact on food security and nutrition, and policy responses needed to address these effects.
FAO is also organizing a side event dedicated to exploring evidence-based approaches and innovative partnerships to advance women’s land rights and decent employment for transformative change in agrifood systems.
Additionally, World Food Forum will launch a Youth Recommendations Paper – the result of a year-long consultative process facilitated by its Youth Assembly – aimed at delineating priority areas of actions related to empowering young women in agrifood systems.
Alongside these events, FAO technical experts and leadership will also be engaging and participating in a wide range of different HLPF side events, sessions and discussions. Check out our dedicated FAO at the HLPF 2025 page to stay up to date on our activities!
