The workshop, held on 13 May 2025, brought together key stakeholders from various sectors to discuss the vital role of biodiversity in agriculture and its significance for sustainable development.

Lao People s Democratic Republic is home to an extraordinary variety of biodiversity, which is critical for food security, climate resilience, and the livelihoods of local communities. Our commitment to strengthening biodiversity must be matched by concerted efforts to address the challenges of biodiversity loss and climate change.

Thavarack Phonekeo Deputy Director General of Department of Environment said that "This project marks a pivotal step for Lao PDR in harmonizing agricultural practices with our rich biodiversity. By empowering local communities and restoring vital ecosystems, we are not only safeguarding our natural heritage but also building a more resilient and sustainable future for all Lao people."

Participants shared insights on the challenges and opportunities faced in conserving biodiversity and enhancing ecosystem resilience.

The FAO is committed to supporting the Lao PDR government in its efforts to protect biodiversity and promote sustainable agricultural practices. This project aims to empower IPLCs and foster community-led conservation initiatives, aligning national efforts with global biodiversity and climate goals.

The challenges we face are significant, but so are the opportunities, the FAO Representative added. This project provides a platform for collaboration across ministries and sectors, ensuring that we work together to safeguard our natural resources for future generations.
